Training for ADHD symptoms ?
“Many of us would have been considered ADHD when all we had was raw energy”.
Please be careful not to label your kids or allow them to be labelled. Sometimes all you have is a very happy active kid. Why introduce drugs to a clean mind?
Brain regulation is the ability of your brain to operate appropriately given the circumstances in front of you – it’s how we control our work, school or social lives. It’s a very important function that most people take for granted. However, sometimes the brain can become dis-regulated, as with many ADHD symptoms*, and can cause a sufferer tremendous difficulties in life.
we do not need a diagnosis to be able to help.
We work with the related ADHD symptoms, which we consider as signs of deregulation in the brain:
- Inattentiveness – parts of the brain associated with concentration might be under aroused
- Hyperactivity– parts associated with physical activity might be over aroused
- Impulsiveness – the parts associated with self-control might be under aroused
Neurofeedback works so well because it is able to focus on each of these areas to restore brain regulation.
Neurofeedback gives us the possibility to focus on each of these areas to restore the brain regulation again. For example, training the left front side of the brain helps improve planning and organization, which supports the ability to hold a plan in mind and finish tasks. And by training the right side we can support physical and/or emotional calming.
Neurofeedback has shown to be a powerful, evidence-based and highly effective tool to improve brain regulation and reduce the symptoms of ADHD in children, youngsters and adults. It provides a safe alternative to medication, meaning you can avoid the wide-ranging and potentially serious side effects attributed to psycho-stimulating medication like Methylphenidate (otherwise known as Ritalin).
Will the effects of Neurofeedback brain training be
By providing feedback, the brain is trained to regulate itself to the point where it does not require the feedback anymore. You are training the brain to perform naturally the functions it was once finding so hard to do. There have been studies of 100 children demonstrating that the results last at least 3 years (Monastra, 2005) below, also below is a case study of a boy whose results lasted at least 10 years:
Monastra VJ (2005). Electroencephalographic biofeedback (neurotherapy) as a treatment for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: rationale and empirical foundation. Child Adolesc Psychiatric Clin N Am, 14, 55– 82
Tansey, M. A. (1993). Ten-year stability of EEG biofeedback results for a hyperactive boy who failed fourth grade perceptually impaired class. Biofeedback and Self-regulation, 18(1), 33-44.
Some people might call this a ‘cure’ for ADHD. With problems of brain disregulation, we would say there is not a disease to be ‘cured’, and restoring self-regulation using Neurofeedback may be a complete remedy.
In October 2012, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the professional body for Peadiatricians in the USA, who also act as the ‘NICE’ equivalent by publishing clinical guidelines, declared that Neurofeedback (also known as EEG-Biofeedback) meets their highest levels of Evidence-Based Practice. Read more about how they reached this conclusion in this free report.
To get lasting results we recommend a minimum commitment of 20 sessions (some calming will show); each session taking approximately 45 minutes from arrival to departure. And like with all training programmes, the more frequently you train the better. But just like exercise, it’s important not to over train. Most require 40 – 60 sessions.
Home Sessions: 20 min therapy (session 1) – break 20min – 20min (session 2).
Inclusive of electrode placements. 2 session per visit will require up to 1hr 30min.
